Cattle panel trellis: Daphne Richards

Making a Contemporary Trellis
Daphne Richards, CEA-Hort, drichards@ag.tamu.edu

Supplies:
4’x16’ cattle panel fencing, cut in half lengthwise to two 4’x8’ pieces
2 to 3 electrical conduit poles, ½”x10’ 2 to 3 T-posts, 6’ tall
T-post driver Level

Bag of 6” rebar ties 1 bar tie twister tool
2.5 or 5 lb hammer Tape measure Pencil

Instructions:
Place the cattle panel fencing on the ground and position the T-posts two-squares in from right and left. Make sure that the anchor plates of the T-posts run parallel with
the cattle panel. Have someone hold the first T-post in place. Use a level to make sure that the T-post stands straight from all angles. Hold T-post steady.

Use a T-post driver or heavy-duty hammer to pound the T-post into the ground until the anchor plate is no longer visible.

Place the electrical conduit pole snug into the inside groove of the T-post.

Hold up the cattle panel a foot or two off the ground, to the height of intended installation, to determine how much of the electrical conduit pole needs to be
driven into the ground. Measure with tape measure. Mark same measurement on the electrical conduit pole above the T-post, so that you can drive down the
electrical conduit pole to the proper height.

Using a heavy hammer or T-post driver, drive electrical conduit pole into the ground to desired depth.

Measure to appropriate width and install the second T-post and electrical conduit pole. Repeat process to drive both into the ground.

Lift the cattle panel a foot or two off the ground and secure it to the T-post/electrical conduit pole with wire ties at each juncture. Use bar tie twister tool by putting tool through the loops on the ends of the wire and twisting it around. Twist snuggly but not too tightly, otherwise the wire will snap.
